A List of #ownvoices LGBT+ Books

You might have noticed I suck at titles. No matter! A couple weeks ago, I had a post on Twitter asking for any and all books y’all could think of that are ownvoices for the LGBT+ aspects. And WOW did y’all deliver! I had people responding, quote retweeting, and DMing me on both Twitter AND Instagram to tell me their favourite ownvoices LGBT+ books.

I was initially asking so that I could use the books for myself for reading and pictures for my own bookstagram account, but the overwhelming number of books that came at me that I had no idea existed before made me want to do more with it. I got together with a few amazing people and we decided to host an Instagram challenge.

I also decided to provide the list for y’all in a way that allows everyone to see it all put together. I’m going to list them in alphabetical order by title. I’m also going to add what the ownvoices rep within the book is in parenthesis. There are some that I’m unsure what the ownvoices rep is, so I’ll just put a ? for those.

Please let me know in the comments or shoot me a DM on Twitter or IG if you know what a book is ownvoices for. Likewise, if I’ve not included a book you know to be ownvoices for the LGBT+ aspects, please let me know and I’ll add it to the list! Also, if I’ve gotten any of these incorrect, please let me know so I can fix it.

I also want to go ahead and note that I know some of these books are problematic for other marginalizations. I am not excusing their problematic nature at all. The hurt caused by them is real and valid. DO NOT tell someone who has been hurt that their pain is not valid because the book is ownvoices, even if they are the same marginalization as the author. Marginalizations ARE NOT  a monolith. I am only listing books based on the ownvoices marginalization represented. I’ll put an asterisk (*) next to those I have heard may contain harmful content. If I missed any please let me know and I will add it.

  1. Are the represented identities in the parentheses those of the MCs or authors? I’m just curious because a lot of ownvoices is written by people in the LGBTQA+ community who may write outside their identity (a bisexual woman may write gay male characters, lesbian characters, etc). I was confused because I saw “Fast Connection” by Santino Hassell has “gay” in parentheses, but the two MCs are bisexual and the author is bisexual/queer. It might make more sense to just indicate the representation in the book with the understanding that the author is a member of the LGBTQA+ community. Just a thought.

    • Great question! (And thank you for letting me know about Fast Connection by Santono Hassell. I will fix that now.)

I thought about doing it that way and simply listing what is represented while acknowledging that the author is part of the LGBT+ community, but lately I’ve noticed a lot of issues happening within the community and wanted to avoid it being an issue with regards to book recommendations. Also, there are books (specifically) that are by gay authors with gay MCs where the book contains biphobia. I decided just to be specific about it because of that.

  3. Great list! As far as I know, Abroad is about a gay jewish boy and it’s only ownvoices for jewish rep. The Dark Wife and Everything Leads to You are ownvoices for lesbian. I’ve seen Malinda Lo mentioned as ownvoices for bi (for Huntress and Adaptation). Shira Glassman is ownvoices for jewish and wlw (not sure how she identifies). Girl Mans Up and Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit are both ownvoices for lesbian.
He isn’t on this list, but I think several of Patrick Ness’s books are ownvoices for gay rep. More Than This is one of them.

    • Awesome! Thank you!! I do have some of Patrick Ness’s books to add still. I’m slowly working on getting everything on the list updated but life has been throwing curveballs and I’m doing this from my phone. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get it all fixed up soon! 🙂 Thank you!!
