Review: Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

Goodreads Synopsis:

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

My Review:

The world building in this book is done so seamlessly as to give the reader a clear mental image while not taking anything away from the story itself. For each location, the story gives us a visual, but also details that make places more realistic. Everything from sounds to smells is given, creating a truly immersive setting for the novel.

The characters grow and develop so much during this novel that it’s easy to forget it’s not a standalone. New characters are introduced and given the same level of attention as existing characters. It’s almost impossible not to imagine yourself interacting with each of the characters because of how real they have become.

When people tell you this series is all-consuming, they’re not joking or exaggerating. It’s completely immersive. This book especially has gone to new levels of depth for the world, characters, and storyline. I can’t imagine how the author will top this novel, yet I’m excitedly waiting for my copy of the next to arrive. I can not wait to see where this story goes!

Overall, I rate Queen of Shadows 5 out of 5 bookworms.

Don’t just take my word for it. Order Queen of Shadows from Amazon US or Amazon UK and enjoy it for yourself!

    • It really is! I’m hoping to read Empire of Storms this month. I want to clear at least most of my immediate TBR before jumping into the #DAReadAThon in the first 2 weeks of January 🤓
